Sustainable Livelihood and Food Security

ANCC in partnership and support with international organizations, donors and government of Afghanistan work together to ensure sustainable nutrition and food security in the country. ANCC since its establishment implemented various projects funded by FAO, WFP, USAID, Netherlands Government and DFID.

ANCC’s actions are oriented towards empowering local farmers by building their capacities and developing their already existing ones, with the aim of giving them greater control over their own development.

Providing training to the local farmers will enable them to strengthen agriculture system and will increase crops production.

ANCC in consultation with beneficiaries tries for their engagement and full involvement in projects implementation to ensure their needs are identified, articulated, met and addressed effectively.

In Uruzgan province people were busy with poppy cultivation while this was the only financial source of the villagers that could get sufficient money from the production of poppy to eke out a living. ANCC in partnership with GSE and Netherlands Government provided saffron seeds to some farmers in Tarin Kot city.

The major aim of this project was to reduce the farmers’ dependency on the cultivation of poppy and provide alternative. After collecting of production they were very happy to sell one kg saffron on 1000 USD.

After one season, taking into consideration of a large amount of money, other immediate communities got interest in saffron cultivation as well.

Different types of technical trainings have been provided to the farmers by ANCC agriculture specialists hence the capacity & knowledge of local farmers are increased in crop value addition, linkages development and improved agriculture management, improved agriculture production skills of farmers, improved income generation of the local farmers, improved coordination and relations between farmers and government authorities.

One of the villagers explained that before we had no idea how to irrigate our crops, when and how much fertilizer to be provided to our crops and when and how to cut the saplings and we were just doing whatever we had been advised by our fathers and grandfathers but now we are guided how to increase our production by using fertilizer and agriculture related medicines.
